Got started hiking the Mt. Scott Service. Road Trail at 6:55am on a very windy day. Lonely trail this morning . No other hikers and no deer, bison, elk or any other type of big game. The wind would have kept me home this morning too if it weren't for the 45-day challenge. Ankles and feet didn't bark really loud today. I took it a little easier today after my 8-mile hike yesterday . Hiked 6.06 miles in 2 hour an 7 minutes of very strong, cold biting wind... Weather during hike:
Clear/Very Windy Start Temp: 38 End Temp: 40 Windchill: 26 (lowest recorded during hike)

Very windy hike this morning. I hiked the Mt. Scott Service Road Trail again today. I hiked a solid 8.01 miles in 2 hours and 45 minutes. Wind had the wildlife laid down, so I didn't see any Game animals today. Sore feet and ankles continue. Weather during hike:
Clear/Very Windy Start Temp: 48 End Temp: 50 Windchill: 40 (lowest recorded during hike) Cold windy morning . Got started my hike at 6:55am. Hiked 6.51 miles in 2 hours and 16 minutes. Hiked the Mt. Scott Service Road Trail this morning, While it was still dark I disturbed a group of deer. It startled me more than it did them... I love being out early in the morning watching nature wake up... Clear Start Temp: 30 End Temp: 35 Windchill: 21 (lowest recorded during hike) I started my hike on the Mt. Scott Service Trail at 6:55am. The temperature was 29 with no wind and clear sky's. I hiked 6.02 miles in 2 hours and 10 minutes. Terri bought me new hiking glove (that I picked out) and they were useless. My fingers like to have frozen off. They are on their way back to the manufacturer. I am still having pain in my feet. Ankles are swollen and I am taping some hot spots on my toes. Still I am enjoying my hiking and my weight and blood pressure is coming down despite my feet.... Weather during hike:
Clear Start Temp: 29 End Temp: 32 Windchill: 25 (lowest recorded during hike) I hiked the Dog Run Hollow trail for the last seven days so today I thought I would hike around to the North side of Mt. Scott. The trail is actually a gravel/rock service road but it does have a lot of elevation change. It is a surprisingly challenging hike but it is lacking the boulders that you clime on the Dog Run Hollow trail. I will be hiking this trail over the next few days. I did to see the game that I usually see but there was sign. Lots of trees Nd I could see the snow on all the elevated surfaces from last nights snow flurries. Also the top of Mt. Scott on this side had a lot of snow showing. The trail is 5-miles long. It is an out and back so the total complaint hike would be 10-miles. My hike this morning started at 7:15am. I Hiked 5.5 miles in 2 hours and 15 minutes . The weather was cold but with light wind it was tolerable. The areas where snow was covering the grass seemed to be colder. All in all I enjoyed this hike... Weather during hike:
Partly Cloudy Start Temp: 30 End Temp: 37 Windchill: 29 (lowest recorded during hike) I started my hike today with the threat of snow in the forecast. I carried my rain jacket in my fanny pack to keep from getting soaked because with the temperature I figured if it snowed it would be a wet snow. I started my hike at 7:10am with a cloudy overcast sky with a little wind. I have not been seeing a lot of deer or elk during my hikes most likely due to the hunting that had been taking place on near by parcels of the refuge. This morning I saw a lot of deer and elk. Maybe they were also trying to beat the snow. Ankles are still barking very loudly and I got my first sign of a blister today... Weather during hike:
Cloudy Start Temp: 32 End Temp: 31 Windchill: 21 (lowest recorded during hike) I hiked 2 hours and 13 moving minutes and logged 5.50 miles of trail on a cold beautiful morning. I started my hike at 7:15am. It was obvious that it was Saturday because the parking lot is usually empty when I finish my hike but this morning there were eight additional vehicles in the lot. I met two groups of hikers while I was on the trail. Ankles were barking loud this morning... Hands froze, even with gloves on..... Weather during hike:
Cloudy Start Temp: 28 End Temp: 36 Windchill: 23 I hiked 2 hours and 19 moving minutes and logged 5.50 miles of trail on a cold beautiful morning. I started my hike at 7:00am. I saw geese, ducks, bison and several whitetail deer including one of the biggest bucks I have ever seen in the refuge today. Muscles were talking loud this morning... Weather during hike:
Cloudy Start Temp: 38 End Temp: 37 Windchill: 29 I hiked 2 hours and 19 moving minutes and logged 5.62 miles of trail on a windy and cold morning. I started my hike at 7:00am. I saw geese, ducks, bison and two cow elk today. I also heard a half dozen gun shots this morning around 8:00 so some of the elk hunters must have been successful this morning. Muscles are starting to get use to the hiking so the time on trail was more enjoyable, but man it was cold this morning.... Weather during hike:
Cloudy/Windy Start Temp: 33 End Temp: 37 Windchill: 23 I hiked 2 hours and 23 moving minutes and logged 5.50 miles of trail on a windy and cold morning. I started my hike at 7:00am. I saw geese, ducks, bison and three whitetail does today. I am still sore but I can tell my joints and muscles are starting to get use to the hike. I think they miss there beer and recliner .... Weather during hike:
Cloudy/Windy Start Temp: 35 End Temp: 47 Windchill: 32 I hiked 2 hours and 27 moving minutes and logged 5.49 miles of trail on a beautiful and cold morning. I started my hike at 7:00am. I saw songbirds, geese, ducks and two groups of whitetail does today. I am sore today but had no pain while hiking but had trouble walking from the truck to the house when I got home... Hot bath time. Weather during hike:
Clear Start Temp: 27 End Temp: 47 I hiked 2 hours and 20 moving minutes and logged 5.47 miles of trail on a beautiful and cold morning. I started my hike at 7:00am. I did not see any animal other than songbirds, geese and ducks today. I assume the special hunts that have been taking place them lain down, in the back country and not moving around. This hike marks the beginning of the 45-Day Challenge. I already have sore ankles... Only 44-days to go! Vertical Divider

Light Clouds Start Temp: 27 End Temp: 45 45-Day Challenge Four years ago I retired and successfully complete a 40-day hiking challenge. Like then I went to the doctor for my annual physical and received a passing grade but my blood pressure was higher than it should have been. (I have gained around 20 pounds during the Covid isolation). Armed with this information I decided to challenge myself to 45-days of trail hiking. I am doing this for same reasons I did the 40-day challenge when I retired, including mental and physical health as well as to get my mind focused and committed to better health. The challenge includes a commitment to not let weather, pain, injuries or anything else keep me from the goal of hiking a minimum of 2-hours a day or 6-miles on trail, with pavement and any form of bicycle riding or walking on pavement not counting. I will drink no form of alcohol during the challenge. The 45-days will end on my 66th birthday..... 𝑻𝒐 𝒘𝒂𝒍𝒌 𝒊𝒏 𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒏𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒂 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒎𝒊𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒍𝒆𝒔. |
