Saw a big Bison on the trail this morning. I though I was going to have to leave the trail to go around him but after he posed for a photo he moved on up the hill and I was able to move on down the trail. I saw Ducks, Geese and Squirrels today. I also met a fisherman and a couple of trail runners on my hike this morning. Challenge is now 25% complete! Weather during hike:

I hiked the Elk, Long Horn and Buffalo Trails today. If they were as long as shown on the trail map I would have hiked 11 miles. GPS showed that the total was 7.61 miles. Still a good hike. This hike completed the first week of the 40-Day Challenge. I saw a Bison, a couple of Cow Elk and several White Tail Does along with the normal Song Birds, Dove, Ducks and Geese. Weather during hike:
AM Temp: 32 (Wind Chill: 22) PM Temp: 48 Hiked 2 hours and 34 moving minutes and logged 7.29 miles of trail on a cold windy morning - Started the hike at 10:00am. Shorter hike but a lot more challenging. More like climbing stairs for two hours. Feet did really good today. Even though the Refuge is an hour away from my home, I will be hiking at the Refuge more than Lake Chickasha during the challenge. It is a lot more strenuous than the Lake hike. I hiked the Buffalo Trail today but even though the sign says the trail is 8-miles it is actually closer to 5.5 or 6 miles. So I also hiked the Long Horn Trail. The sign says it is 2-miles and it appears to be about 1.5 miles. These two trails combined for the 7.29 miles I completed today. Saw a bison and several long horn cattle while driving to the trail head. All I saw on the trail was song birds, Dove, Ducks and Geese. What a hike! It was great. AM Temp: 28 (Wind Chill: 18)
PM Temp: 43 Hiked 2 hours and 43 moving minutes and logged 8.24 miles of trail on a cold windy morning - Started the hike at 7:00am. Once I got away from the lake the wind wasn't so bad. Feet did really good today... New hiking socks and liners really helped. Saw rabbits, song birds and a shooter 8-point buck this morning. AM Temp: 35 (Wind Chill: 26)
PM Temp: 48 Hiked 2 hours and 43 moving minutes and logged 8.22 miles of trail on a very beautiful morning - Started the hike at 7:00am and made the entire hike before the wind picked up for the day. Took better care of my feet today... Lesson learned! Saw a rabbit and a coyote this morning. Beautiful Sunrise. AM Temp: 39 (Wind Chill: 33)
PM Temp: 73 Hiked 2 hours and 34 moving minutes and logged 8.22 miles of trail on a very beautiful morning - Started the hike at 7:00am Got my first blister during this hike. Right foot toe next to the big one. Drained and medicated. Jumped several coveys of Quail and several singles. Saw rabbits, deer and lots of song birds. AM Temp: 26 (Wind Chill: 21)
PM Temp: 62 Hiked 2 hours and 41 moving minutes and logged 8.01 miles of trail on a very windy morning - gust up to 38 mph. Jumped a small covey of Quail and ran into a group of wild hogs. I did not have a gun with me so I did not stay around long enough to get a photo of the hogs.... AM Temp: 45 (Wind Chill: 38)
PM Temp: 59 Day one of the 40-day challenge! Decided to hike the NW side of Lake Chickasha. I have hike this before but it has been several years ago. No designated trail here but I hiked what I call the Perimeter Trail as I just followed the property fence. The farmer that has the property leased from the city drives the fences on his four-wheeler so there is somewhat of a trail to travel. Hiked 11.06 miles in 3 hours and 48 minutes. I saw lots of wildlife on this hike. The biggest surprise was a Bald Eagle. It was very protective of its nest so I did not get closer than 100-yards. Deer, rabbits and song birds were every where. I also saw one of the largest groups of Wild Turkeys that I have ever seen. (The City no longer allows hunting on the lake property) AM Temp: 31 (Wind Chill: 30)
PM Temp: 68
40-Day Challenge
I went to the doctor for my annual physical this morning and received a passing grade but my blood pressure was higher than it has ever been. Armed with that information I decided to challenge myself to 40-days of trail hiking. I am doing this for several reasons, including mental and physical health as well as to get my mind focused and committed to new challenges. The challenge includes a commitment to not let weather, pain, injuries or anything else keep me from the goal of hiking a minimum of 2-hours a day on trail, with pavement and any form of bicycle riding or walking on pavement not counting. OH! did I mention that I will drink no form of alcohol during the challenge. If it weren't already enough of a challenge that is the icing on the cake...... I will be doing most of the challenge hiking at Lake Chickasha simply because it is only a 20-minute drive from my house. Check back to see how I am doing........ I took advantage of a beautiful day and took a trip to Lake Murray State Park south of Ardmore, Oklahoma. (A short 200 mile round trip drive) According to Fitbit I walked 17,552 steps - 8.74 miles - climbed the equivalent to 99 floors and burned 4,243 calories in two and a half hours of walking the Buckhorn and Big Loop Trails.
I also did a little Geocaching while I was on the trail and dropped off a Geocoin that I picked up on Christmas Vacation in Missouri. AM Temp: 44 (Wind Chill: 42) PM Temp: 77 In celebration of my retirement, I got up this morning and went to Roman Nose State Park just north of Watonga for a brisk morning hike. According to Fitbit I walked 21,145 steps - 10.53 miles - climbed the equivalent to 111 floors and burned 4,584 calories in three hours of walking the Inspiration Overlook and Switchback Trails.
AM Temp: 24 (Wind Chill: 18) PM Temp: 55 Went back to Lawton today. Walked the same trail. It's the closest trail to my house even though it is 40-miles away. Didn't see anyone else. A little cold weather and everyone stays home..... I did get to see a couple of Bison, a white tail deer and several big wild Tom Turkeys. It's amazing what you see when you get out on a cold drab day.... According to Fitbit I walked 17,083 steps - 8.5 miles - climbed the equivalent to 88 floors and burned 4,638 calories
All in 2-hours on the nose..... AM Temp: 16 (Wind Chill: 2) PM Temp: 24 To cold to work in the yard today so I went hiking again! Hiked the same trail at Lawton's Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge today. Lonely trail today!
A lot colder today! Part of the area that the Buffalo Trail goes through looks like a moonscape due to a wildland fire that has burned the area sometime in the last coupe of years. According to Fitbit the hike was 17,313 steps - 8.62 miles - climbed the equivalent to 115 floors - 4,675 calories Not a bad start to the New Year.... AM Temp: 29 (Wind Chill: 17) PM Temp: 53 It is time to start enjoying my retirement - Today was so beautiful that I couldn't resist heading to Lawton and break-in new shoes on the 8-mile Buffalo Trail. According to Fitbit the hike was 17,283 steps - 8.5 miles - climbed the equivalent to 83 floors - 4,156 calories
Not a bad start to the New Year.... AM Temp: 46 (Wind Chill: 41) PM Temp: 63 |
