I hiked 2 hours and 06 moving minutes and logged 5.50 miles of trail on a very FOGGY morning - I had obligations in OKC so I got a late 9:00am start. Lots of other hikers this morning. The best thing about this mornings hike was the fog. Not the fact that you couldn't see very far but the moisture that it brought refreshed the refuge and you could smell the trees and grass. It was a refreshing change from the dusty dry atmosphere that we have had for the last several weeks... With all of the hikers on the trail this morning, as well as with all of the fog, I did not see any big animals on the trail this morning. Weather during hike:

AM Temp: 32 (Wind Chill: 22) PM Temp: 48 Hiked 2 hours and 34 moving minutes and logged 7.29 miles of trail on a cold windy morning - Started the hike at 10:00am. Shorter hike but a lot more challenging. More like climbing stairs for two hours. Feet did really good today. Even though the Refuge is an hour away from my home, I will be hiking at the Refuge more than Lake Chickasha during the challenge. It is a lot more strenuous than the Lake hike. I hiked the Buffalo Trail today but even though the sign says the trail is 8-miles it is actually closer to 5.5 or 6 miles. So I also hiked the Long Horn Trail. The sign says it is 2-miles and it appears to be about 1.5 miles. These two trails combined for the 7.29 miles I completed today. Saw a bison and several long horn cattle while driving to the trail head. All I saw on the trail was song birds, Dove, Ducks and Geese. What a hike! It was great. AM Temp: 28 (Wind Chill: 18)

PM Temp: 73 Hiked 2 hours and 34 moving minutes and logged 8.22 miles of trail on a very beautiful morning - Started the hike at 7:00am Got my first blister during this hike. PM Temp: 62 Hiked 2 hours and 41 moving minutes and logged 8.01 miles of trail on a very windy morning - gust up to 38 mph. Jumped a small covey of Quail and ran into a group of wild hogs. PM Temp: 59 Day one of the 40-day challenge! Decided to hike the NW side of Lake Chickasha. I have hike this before but it has been several years ago. No designated trail here but I hiked what I call the Perimeter Trail as I just followed the property fence. The farmer that has the property leased from the city drives the fences on his four-wheeler so there is somewhat of a trail to travel. Hiked 11.06 miles in 3 hours and 48 minutes. I saw lots of wildlife on this hike. The biggest surprise was a Bald Eagle. It was very protective of its nest so I did not get closer than 100-yards. Deer, rabbits and song birds were every where. I also saw one of the largest groups of Wild Turkeys that I have ever seen. (The City no longer allows hunting on the lake property) AM Temp: 31 (Wind Chill: 30)
PM Temp: 68
40-Day Challenge
I went to the doctor for my annual physical this morning and received a passing grade but my blood pressure was higher than it has ever been. Armed with that information I decided to challenge myself to 40-days of trail hiking. I am doing this for several reasons, including mental and physical health as well as to get my mind focused and committed to new challenges. The challenge includes a commitment to not let weather, pain, injuries or anything else keep me from the goal of hiking a minimum of 2-hours a day on trail, with pavement and any form of bicycle riding or walking on pavement not counting. OH! did I mention that I will drink no form of alcohol during the challenge. If it weren't already enough of a challenge that is the icing on the cake...... I will be doing most of the challenge hiking at Lake Chickasha simply because it is only a 20-minute drive from my house. Check back to see how I am doing........ |
